In 1988, the office of the President was re-established following the re-organization of the public universities
of Maryland under the new University System of Maryland. Each campus in the System has its own President,
and the entire System is overseen by a Chancellor.
Past presidents of the Maryland Agricultural College, the Maryland State College of Agriculture,
and the University of Maryland
The school was known as the Maryland Agricultural College from its founding in 1856 until the state of
Maryland assumed full control of the university in 1916. It was then renamed the Maryland State College
of Agriculture, a name it retained until the merger of the College Park campus with the university's
professional schools in Baltimore to form the University of Maryland in 1920.
