Strategic planning at the University of Maryland presents an important moment in our history for us to examine our current state, evaluate strengths and trends across campus, and assess the evolving higher education landscape. It also presents a critical opportunity for all of us to engage our community; consider new areas for impact in teaching, learning and research; inspire innovation; expand collaboration; and build a blueprint for the future of the University of Maryland.
This is our time to reinvent our University. Thinking strategically, we must discover and implement 21st century ways to improve the quality of instruction, research and administrative operations and spirit of community. We must promote research and scholarship, enhance the student experience and cultivate an inclusive work and learning environment. We must re-envision our campus and community as a modern flagship research university for the common good.

The strategic planning committee is addressing the following questions through an open and inclusive process:
The university will advance through this strategic planning process with transparency and clarity, and consistently engage the campus community. We look forward to creating a bold and inspiring document that will define our institution and guide its ascendancy for the next decade.
In order to encourage bold and creative thinking, the University created six broad Planning Committees to help shape the next strategic plan. Each committee has been asked to think broadly about the opportunities and challenges UMD faces in the coming years and to identify corresponding strategic priorities. Planning Committees are encouraged to consider cross-cutting initiatives and not be limited by their core areas of focus. All Committees are using the guiding principles to shape their thinking.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: We are strongest when embracing voices, ideas, perspectives, identities and experiences across the diversity of our campus. Together, we work toward justice.

The Strategic Planning schedule includes five phases from June 2021 to March 2022.
Phase I: June 2021
Engage strategic plan committees about process (through interviews)
Phase II: July-November 2021
Engage stakeholders about strength, weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis
Phase III: November-December 2021
Synthesize strategic priorities, prioritize goals and objectives; define initiatives
Phase IV: November-December 2021
Prepare draft strategic plan
Phase V: January-March 2022
Finalize strategic plan
