Input & Comments

The Search Committee welcomes active input from the entire UMD community. The Committee is eager to hear your thoughts about the current needs of the UMD community and the challenges and opportunities ahead for the University. The Committee also seeks your input on the qualifications and characteristics that you feel would position the next President of the University of Maryland, College Park to be successful. In order to help frame your thinking, the Search Committee and the search firm have drafted the following questions to which you may consider responding:
 
  1. How will you know that the Regents hired the right person – one year from now, three years from now, and five years from now?  What objective measures for success do you have in mind?  Are there important subjective or informal measures for determining success as well? 
  2. What are the challenges facing higher education? How do those challenges relate to UMD and how will they impact the next President and their agenda?   
  3. What experiences would lead you to believe someone has the skills and expertise to do this job well (e.g. experience in a major research intensive university, demonstrated record of championing an inclusive climate, understanding of university athletics at the highest level, or demonstrated fund raising success)?  What is needed at this particular point in the history of UMD? 
  4. Where do you expect us to find this person (e.g. a sitting college or university president, international universities, government, etc.)? 
  5. Why is the UMD presidency a special opportunity?  If people you know were interested in being President, what would you tell them about this position?  
  6. Finally, what do you think the community (faculty, students, staff, regents, etc.) need to do to ensure the success of the next President?

Athletics

Home of the Terrapins, the University of Maryland has one of the nation’s most recognizable and successful athletics programs. More than 550 student-athletes compete each year in 20 intercollegiate sports—12 for women and eight for men. Since 2005 alone, Maryland has won 19 national championships, including NCAA titles in women’s basketball, men’s soccer, men's lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, and field hockey. Since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2014, UMD has won a combined 32 regular season and tournament championships. Fear the Turtle!

Student Life

The Terp experience extends beyond classrooms, labs and studios. It encompasses residence halls and dining halls, clubs and sports, fraternities and sororities, campus events and performances, and countless off-campus destinations. Maryland touts 800-plus student organizations, dozens of prestigious living and learning communities, and countless other ways to get involved. Students here can create a unique identity and grow as individuals, even as they’re part of a close-knit and diverse community.
