Education Abroad resumes in-person programming in AY 2021-22

June 17, 2021

Dear UMD Community,

As you may have seen from communications shared with students and advisors, our Education Abroad team opened applications for Fall 2021 in-person programs at the beginning of April. Today, I am pleased to confirm that Education Abroad plans to move forward with many of these Fall 2021 programs, and intends to broaden our study abroad program selection for Winter, Spring, and Spring Break 2022. More information on those programs will be shared with students, advisors and departments by Education Abroad in the weeks to come, with applications to open this August.

We are thrilled to be able to reopen study abroad opportunities and are making every effort to create experiences for students that are both safe and rewarding.

The Office of International Affairs and the University of Maryland’s International Risk Management Committee are actively monitoring the global risk environment, following guidance from such authorities as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of State (DoS), and other public health and security experts. Our decisions also are informed by such factors as the health care infrastructure in host countries and countries’ entrance requirements.

Several developments over the last few weeks have further influenced our decisions. Among them, the CDC and DoS decided to lower their travel advisories for many countries, the CDC issued updated guidance for vaccinated travelers, and the University of Maryland provided additional information on vaccine requirements.

In addition, our team is working with international partners to ensure that the appropriate structures and protocols are in place to support our students' health and safety, and to maintain academic continuity of programs should a disruption occur.

Please visit our Fall 2021 Program Offerings and Coronavirus and Study Abroad Updates webpages for any additional updates over the summer, as we continue to monitor global conditions.

We look forward to the safe reopening of our Education Abroad programs, and thank you for your continued support in our work to create innovative, engaging global education opportunities for our students.

Sincerely,

Ross Lewin
Associate Vice President of International Affairs
