Timeline


There are a number of dates throughout the Fall 2018 semester and beyond that illustrate the relevant events and actions associated with mold at the University of Maryland.

September 19: Residential Facilities notifies Elkton Hall residents—as well as additional halls—of mold developing in residence halls across campus. The email contained an explanation of mold-producing conditions, tips on how to help stop the spread of mold and contact information to assist those with specific health concerns. 
 
September 21: Department of Resident Life sent a notice to Elkton Hall residents, notifying them of the mold issues and sharing plans for remediation and hotel relocation for residents. 
 
Departments of Resident Life and Residential Facilities host a Q&A session for Elkton residents and family members who were present for Family Weekend to address concerns and provide information.
 
September 23: Department of Resident Life begins relocating Elkton Hall students to local hotels and sends an email notification to parents and families. 
 
September 25: Department of Residential Facilities staff and contractors begin floor by floor remediation efforts in Elkton Hall. 
 
Office of the Provost, Division of Student Affairs & Division of Administration and Finance sent a notice to all university faculty and staff updating them on the mold situation and requesting academic accommodations for students affected by the occurrences of mold and relocations. The Department of Resident Life shared this notice with residents. 
 
October 10: Mold remediation efforts have been completed in Elkton Hall and students are moved back into their residence hall rooms.  
 
January 31, 2019: Department of Residential Facilities developed a Moisture Control Plan to ensuring moisture control and dehumidification in residence halls moving forward. Several permanent solutions and short-term measures were expedited, based on each building’s specific technical needs.
 
March 5, 2019: Vice President of Student Affairs, Linda Clement writes a letter to the State of Maryland Education & Economic Development Subcommittee to address comments made about the presence of mold and adenovirus at the university during the Fall 2018 semester.  
 
March 18-22, 2019: Residential Facilities staff members installed portable dehumidifiers in seven residence halls, as part of Resident Life and Residential Facilities’ Moisture Control plan that was released on January 31, 2019. 
 
April - Present: Resident Life and Residential Facilities develop moisture control plan to address high humidity that may occur in the future which is tailored to each affected residence hall.

Our vibrant campus arts community collaborates with local and national cultural organizations such as the Phillips Collection, Kennedy Center and Folger Shakespeare Library. Student and faculty artists, designers, historians, writers and performers are exploring new media, presenting new perspectives, investigating new techniques and engaging new audiences.

Athletics

Home of the Terrapins, the University of Maryland has one of the nation’s most recognizable and successful athletics programs. More than 550 student-athletes compete each year in 20 intercollegiate sports—12 for women and eight for men. Since 2005 alone, Maryland has won 19 national championships, including NCAA titles in women’s basketball, men’s soccer, men's lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, and field hockey. Since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2014, UMD has won a combined 32 regular season and tournament championships. Fear the Turtle!

Student Life

The Terp experience extends beyond classrooms, labs and studios. It encompasses residence halls and dining halls, clubs and sports, fraternities and sororities, campus events and performances, and countless off-campus destinations. Maryland touts 800-plus student organizations, dozens of prestigious living and learning communities, and countless other ways to get involved. Students here can create a unique identity and grow as individuals, even as they’re part of a close-knit and diverse community.
