Due to safety concerns related to the forecast for severe weather on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the main Commencement ceremony will move to its planned alternative date on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The time of the processional and program will remain the same.

This change does not affect individual school and college ceremonies.

We understand that this change may be disruptive, but know that we have made this decision to prioritize safety and to provide the best possible experience for graduates and guests.

Acting President

Charles Benedict Calvert (1808-64) served as acting president of the Maryland Agricultural College in late 1859 and 1860.

Calvert was founder of the Maryland Agricultural College, president of the Board of Trustees and a well-known philanthropist, planter and congressman.

Enrollment increased under his brief administration, from 35 to 63 students. He established a noncredit preparatory program for applicants who could not meet the college's academic requirements.

He also hired a prominent Washington scientist, Townend Glover, as professor of botany and entomology.
