John Work Scott

1860

President

Although officially elected in 1860, John Work Scott (1807-1879) may never have come to campus. At the time of his election on April 13, 1860, Scott was serving as president of Washington College in Pennsylvania, known today as Washington and Jefferson College. He voluntarily retired from the presidency of Washington College prior to its merger with Jefferson College and completed his career in higher education teaching at West Virginia University. He died on July 25, 1879.
