John M. Colby was the principal of the Allegany County Academy in Cumberland, Md., when he was elected president of the Maryland Agricultural College in July 1860. The college's enrollment peaked at 58 during his tenure, but dropped off sharply with the approach of war.

Colby resigned during the 1860-61 academic year.
